Asalaam O Alaykum,

Alhumdullilah, this year I had the opportunity once again to attend Ilm Summit, a two-week intense knowledge retreat hosted by Al Maghrib. The venue was none other than Houston, Texas (shout out to sister starbucks) where we stayed in a grand hotel, and I also got a nice view of the parking lot from my room =). I did not look outside much anyway.

When I came back to Toronto, everyone asked me that one infamous question, “how was Ilm Summit?” I’ve always had trouble properly defining Ilm Summit, surely one word cannot do justice to two weeks of amazing euphoria and learning Islam in ways one cannot imagine. All I could muster up was a word or two with the occasional stutter, “it was um…amazing…beyond amazing.”

In this post I will try to accurately describe my feelings; when I was preparing my self for this event, once I was there, and the returning journey. Insha’Allah.

When I applied for Ilm Summit, I was not expecting a really swift response. I did know they were accepting students in batches so I just kept my head up high, focused on the last few courses I had left for secondary school, and did lots of dua! Alhumdullilah, one day I was casually checking my e-mail and received the acceptance letter. Squeals of joy are an understatement as to what I was feeling when I found out I would be attending. I had already save up some money in my Ilm Summit travel funds box and was more than excited for July to come. I made sure I had all the proper equipment with me before I left and also made sure I was mentally ready. I knew that this year would be much more intense, which is why I told myself once I get there I would make a routine for myself in order to study hard and get good grades and be successful over all in retention of knowledge.

Asalaam O Alaykum!

What an exciting week it has been! MashaAllah, there was a flurry of activities taking place within Toronto catering to the Muslim community. First off, let me say, Journey of Faith was amazing! MashaAllah TabarkAllah. The organizers did a great job and the speakers were fantastic. It was such an emaan boost seeing a huge crowd of 10,000 people all under one roof for the sake of Allah. Alas, the conference was about our own journey to Allah (SWT). The points that were oft repeated were those of maintaing hope and fear of Allah, which would also at the same time equate to love. We just have to keep the goal in mind, the pleasure of Allah (SWT) and just remember that this life is extremely short. As stories have been floating in the media of celebrities dying, it seems as if people have failed to take this as a reminder. A reminder that death is sudden and inevitable.  They keep restating the fact that the person’s songs or movies have forever immortalized them, but nothing is immortal.  Only Allah is The Ever-lasting (Al-Hayy).

What is charity?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Every act of goodness is charity.” – Sahih Muslim

The importance of charity

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The believer’s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.” – Al-Tirmidhi

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said: “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” – Al-Tirmidhi

Smiling is charity

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Charity is prescribed for each descendant of Adam every day the sun rises.” He was then asked: “From what do we give charity every day?” The Prophet answered: “The doors of goodness are many…enjoining good, forbidding evil, removing harm from the road, listening to the deaf, leading the blind, guiding one to the object of his need, hurrying with the strength of one’s legs to one in sorrow who is asking for help, and supporting the feeble with the strength of one’s arms–all of these are charity prescribed for you.” He also said: “Your smile for your brother is charity.” – Fiqh-us-Sunnah, Volume 3, Number 98

Asalaam O Alaykum,

Well what can I say, I had a goal for four posts but I haven’t been up to fulfill this goal. I haven’t updated much because of my hectic schedule, I have one course to go before I’m done high school (InshaAllah) and then it is exam mania. Some more exciting news is that Al Huda 2007-08 students are having their convocation ceremony on 27th of June. It’s really exciting :).  Anyway, this is just an update post to notify whoever has been following my blog that I have not disappeared! Once I am finished with all my academic studies, InshaAllah, I plan to blog throughout the summer.

7

The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray.

Asalaam O Alaykum,

Surah Al Fatihah is the first surah to be revealed in its entirety with respect to chronology, and it is the first surah to be in the Qu’ran in respect to its placement. We recite surah Al Fatihah 17 times in our salah daily, it is the most recited Surah. Al Fatihah literally means ‘The Opening’. This Surah is opening the door of guidance for all.

Virtues of Surah Al Fatihah

Once the Prophet was traveling when he disembarked and began walking alongside a companion. He asked him, ‘Shouldn’t I tell you the best part of the Qur’an?’ then he recited ‘Alhamdu lillahi rabil alameen’ (Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds). (First verse in Surrah Al Fatiha (1:1) [Hakim]

Abu Sa’id ibn al-Mu’allaa said, “I was praying in the masjid when the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) called me and I did not answer. I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I was praying.’ He said, ‘Did not Allah say, “Respond to Allah and to the Messenger when He calls you”?’ Then He said, ‘Shall I teach you the greatest sura of the Quran before you leave the masjid?’ He took my hand. When we were about to leave, I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, you said, “I will teach you the greatest sura of the Quran?’” He said, “Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds” are the seven mathaani and the “Immense Qur’an” which I was given.’” [Bukhari]

Asalaam O Alaykum,

I honestly feel really bad for neglecting this blog. InshaAllah, maybe every month I will try to get out four posts or so. Although I cannot guarantee anything.

إِنَّ اللّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ

The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘rejoice, for verily this Qur’an – one part of it is in the hands of Allah and the other part is in your hands. Therefore, hold on to it, for you will never be destroyed nor go astray after it!’ (Musnad Ahmad).

Is there any other book that can give us a connection to Allah if we hold onto it? If we read it? Holding the Qur’an not only physically but within our hearts and living the commands. Taking the Qur’an with us wherever we go, so we are recognized as Ahlul-Qur’an (people of Qur’an).

Where do we receive the untainted and pure guidance from?

The answer lies in returning to the source, Al Qu’ran Al Kareem

I have completed my Taleem al Quran course. It was more then just sitting down and learning the tafsir of the Holy Book, it was feeding my soul with what it had always wanted, it was a journey of spiritual fulfillment. I had never expected it to be like this, my presumptions before and my thought process now are two different entities. I am a changed person. My heart beats, my limbs move, I do what I do for the pleasure of Allah.

One chapter of my life is closed, another begins. The knowledge I gained is now an obligation upon me to pass on. What I yearned to learn from the Quran, I should yearn to teach others in the same manner. This is the beginning of another road where I will come in contact with people from all walks of life, some who will accept the message, and some who may not.

In the Quran, within Surah Ash-Sharh V5-6 it says, “For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease. Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.” With one hardship comes two eases. This is a truth in life, an example of this is an illness I suffered and in the end I came back fully recovered and with a fresh perspective on life. Allah will help, He helps all those who go out in His path and struggle for His Sake.

I hope Allah accepts all that we have done for His Deen and that Allah admits us into His mercy, Jannat Al Firdous.

Asalaam O Alaykum,

Sorry again for pulling another disappearing act. Life is very busy at the moment, my English course is concluding on December 10th and I still have to finish reading Life of Pi (I’m not sure what to make of the book yet.)

In other exciting news: The Taleem Al Qur’an course is finishing in a month and some days. Every time I think about it, I have this nervous feeling-like a thousand butterflies fluttering around in my stomach. I am happy and sad at the same time, I’ve had a fantastic time (InshAllah, I plan to blog about my journey through the Qu’ran).

With that said and done, I plan to post in the near future bi’ithnillah.
